Walt Disney World How to Pack - Tips & Checklist
Updated: Mar 13, 2023
The trip is booked and fast approaching so let's get packing for your upcoming Walt Disney World Vacation. I love Disney and have been coming here on vacation for over 20 years but the one thing I never enjoyed was packing for my trip.
Remembering and knowing what to pack can be overwhelming, especially if you're traveling with children, so we have created a FREE Checklist to help you prepare for your magical vacation. With so much to see and do, it's essential to pack wisely to ensure you have everything you need to enjoy your time at the most magical place on earth. Here are some tips to help you pack for your Disney World vacation:
Disney World Packing Tips:
1 . Check the Weather
The one thing about Florida is that the weather can be unpredictable at times. Yes it can get very hot and yes it will rain almost daily during certain times of the year but we do also have the occasional cold spell as well. So you want to be prepared for the time of year you choose to visit. Nothing is worse then having all pants when the temperatures hit 90 in the middle of February or to be left in the cold with no jacket when the temps dip at night after a hot day.
-Rain Gear
Florida is known for its afternoon rain showers, especially during the summer months. Pack a poncho or lightweight rain jacket to keep you dry during these unexpected downpours. You can also purchase ponchos at the park, but they can be more expensive than bringing your own.
2. Make a List
Before you start packing, make a list of all the items you will need for your trip. Start by thinking about the basics such as clothes, toiletries, and medication. Then consider the specific activities you plan to do, such as swimming or running. Don't forget to include items for your children, such as snacks, diapers, and strollers.
3. Clothing
When visiting Disney World, it's important to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. You'll be doing a lot of walking, so make sure your shoes are broken in and comfortable. Also, consider packing clothes that are breathable and lightweight. Also no one wants to over pack but you do want to make sure that you have enough clothes to get you through your trip with a spare or two for emergencies. There have been plenty of times that I've gotten caught in a rainstorm at the parks and having and extra shirt and socks has been a lifesaver. And dont forget a poncho or rain gear.
-Comfortable Shoes
This is arguably the most important item to bring to Disney World. You'll be doing a lot of walking and standing, so you want to make sure you have comfortable shoes that won't cause blisters or sore feet. Consider investing in a good pair of walking shoes or sneakers that are broken in and comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
-Comfortable Clothes
In addition to comfortable shoes, you'll want to pack comfortable clothes that you can move around in easily. Choose clothing made from lightweight, breathable fabrics, such as cotton or moisture-wicking materials, to keep you cool in the Florida heat.
-Layers
While it can be hot during the day, temperatures can drop at night, especially during the winter months. Pack a light jacket or sweatshirt that you can easily tie around your waist during the day and put on at night.
-Swimsuits
If you plan to visit the water parks or your hotel has a pool, pack a swimsuit. You can also bring a cover-up or light shorts and t-shirt to wear over your swimsuit if you plan to visit the parks afterwards.
-Theme Park Attire
Disney World has a relaxed dress code, but keep in mind that certain clothing items are not allowed on certain rides. For example, flip flops and sandals are not allowed on certain roller coasters. Be sure to check the park guidelines before you pack to avoid any issues.
-Nighttime Outfits
If you plan to visit any restaurants or lounges at the parks or Disney Springs, pack a few dressier outfits for the evenings. You don't need to go all out, but a nice shirt or dress paired with comfortable shoes can make you feel more put together.
-Accessories
Don't forget to pack accessories to complete your outfits. Sunglasses, hats, and scarves can add a pop of color and protect you from the sun. You can also bring jewelry, such as Disney-themed earrings or bracelets, to show off your love for Disney.
-Laundry Facilities
If you plan to stay at a Disney World resort, keep in mind that most of them have laundry facilities available for guests to use. You can pack fewer outfits and do laundry halfway through your trip to save space in your suitcase.
4. Sun Protection
The sun in Florida can be intense, so it's essential to pack sun protection. This includes sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. You may also want to consider bringing an umbrella as it can pull double duty to shield you from the sun and rain.
-Sunscreen and Sunglasses
The Florida sun can be intense, so make sure to bring sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself from UV rays. You can purchase travel-sized sunscreen or bring a larger bottle and refill as needed.
5. Park Essentials
In addition to the basics, there are a few items you'll need specifically for the parks. A backpack or fanny pack is a great way to carry all of your park essentials, including tickets, maps, snacks, and water bottles. You may also want to consider bringing a portable phone charger to keep your devices charged throughout the day as you will be taking lots of pictures and making plans using the My Disney Experience App.
-Backpack or Bag
A backpack or bag is essential for carrying all of your essentials throughout the day. Look for a bag with comfortable straps and enough room to hold your water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, and any other items you might need throughout the day.
-Portable Charger
With all of the photo opportunities and social media updates you'll want to share, your phone battery is sure to drain quickly. Bring a portable charger with you to ensure that you always have enough juice to capture every moment.
-Autograph Book and Pen
Meeting your favorite Disney characters is a highlight of any Disney World trip, and an autograph book and pen are a great way to remember those interactions. You can purchase autograph books at the parks, or make your own beforehand with scrapbook paper and a spiral binding machine.
6. Disney Apparel
No trip to Disney World is complete without wearing some Disney-themed apparel. Consider packing a t-shirt or hat with your favorite Disney character or attraction. You can also purchase Disney merchandise at the park to wear throughout your visit. Which takes us to our next topic.
7. Souvenirs
When you are packing make sure to leave some spare room for your souvenirs. Disney World is a magical place, and you'll want to remember your trip forever. Consider packing a few extra dollars for souvenirs, such as Mickey Mouse ears or a t-shirt.
8. Snacks and Water
Disney World can be expensive, and the food options may not always be what you're looking for. Consider packing some snacks and water bottles to keep you and your family hydrated and energized throughout the day.
9. Other Essentials
In addition to the above items, be sure to pack any other essentials you may deem necessary . Dont forget a first aid kit and any medications you may need. You might also want to bring a portable fan or water bottle to keep cool on hot days.
-Portable Fan or Misting Fan
The Florida heat can be intense, so consider bringing a portable fan or misting fan to help you stay cool. You can find battery-operated fans at most stores or online, or invest in a fan that attaches to your stroller or backpack.
-Laundry Bag
If you'll be staying at a Disney World resort, a laundry bag can come in handy for separating dirty clothes from clean ones. You can also use it to store wet or damp items.
-Ziploc Bags
Ziploc bags can be useful for a variety of purposes, from storing snacks to protecting your phone from water on water rides. Consider bringing a few different sizes.
10. Patience and a Positive Attitude
Finally, remember that Disney World can be crowded and hectic at times, but a positive attitude and a little bit of patience can go a long way. Don't stress too much about having the perfect packing list – the most important thing is to have fun and make memories that will last a lifetime.
